Background: National Forest Policy envisages to have a minimum of 33& of the total geographical area under forest/ tree cover to maintain environmental stability and ecological balance which are vital for sustenance of all life forms, human, animal and plants. In Tealngan Stae, forest area is 25.16% of the total geographical area The State Government has initiated a flagship programme, “Telanganaku Haritha Haaram” for taking massive afforestation activities to increase the green over of the Telangana State to the desired level of 33% of the State’s total geographical area from the existing 25.16% area.
For next 3 years, starting from 2015, it has been decided to plant 230 Crore plants with 120 Crore plants in non-forests areas and 100 Crore trees in forest areas. Schools are amongst the thrust areas amongst the non-forest areas identified for undertaking plantation.

A detailed exercise has been undertaken by the State Government for identification of nurseries and the sites available for raising plantations. 3,300 number of nurseries have been identified in the State for raising approx. 41 Crore seedlings for catering to plantation in 2015. The nurseries will be raised by various agencies involved, Forest Department, DWMA, Agriculture, Horticulture, Tribal Welfare etc.

As a part of the Telanganaku Haritha Haaram programme, the Department of School Education undertaking 1 Crore tree plantation in the schools/offices in 3 years during 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Targeted Areas: 
1. There are 43861 schools in the state including 14329 private schools.
2. 10 DEO offices and 464 MEO offices
3. Block plantation in vacant land inside 43861 schools, landscaping in the 29,785 schools are having compound walls and in 40,346 schools water is available.

water facility

Approach: 
The approach involves the following main stages:
Stage I:Estimation of Plantation Requirements (May/June)
State II:Plantation/Landscape Designing(June/July/August)
State II:Implementation (June onwards)

IN STAGE I:
Plantation requirements are to be assessed by collecting information on the available open spaces and areas for undertaking plantation (block plantation), and necessary information (soil type, slope, drainage conditions etc.) should be collected for identifying the suitable
plant species. The Forest Department of the State will support in advising on the suitable species based on the information provided. Also, the Forest Department will support in making the plant species available. The formats for collecting and compiling information
are attached.

IN STAGE II: 
Plantation/landscaping designing is to be undertaken scientifically so that the plantation undertaken results in creating the desired positive impacts of visual aesthetics, climate change adaptation, micro-climate control and pollution absorption. For this purpose, experts/consultants are to be engaged at Director of School Education level. For ensuring uniformity, an expert will be engaged to develop technical specification, undertake designing work on pilot basis for schools and offices in providing training/orientation to the Regional level Officers/District level Officers and consultants engaged by them.

IN STAGE III:
Implementation of plantation will be under taken in accordance with an implementation plan developed. The Forest Department of the State will guide in developing implementation plan and undertaking its implementation. The implementation of plantation should be undertaken by the individual schools/offices plantation at school will
be taken up students and staff and officers by the staff. The implementation plan will include plantation drives involving communities, schools, NGOs etc. during June. The drive will be launched in the month of June after reopening of schools.
