Poor water quality and sanitation situation causes diarrhoea, the second biggest cause of death in children under five years of age. Each day approximately 2000 children die in India as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation.

Schools are nodes for disease transmission. Unsafe schools pose risks for the health and development of children and adolescents. Conditions such as lack of access to safe water, proper sanitary facilities and hygiene behavior such as hand washing have important implications for the health and education of children, especially girls. Stunting of children is now directly attributed to unsafe sanitation situation and exposure to disease causing pathogens. Poor health and nutrition among children reduce their time in school and therefore learning, affecting education outcomes.

Programme Objectives:
1. Telangana state has about 28 lakh school-going children in Government Schools. These children need sustainable access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities all round the year. To achieve this, schools need to be WASH friendly and Headmasters/ teachers play a major role in planning a good WASH programme and in inculcating safe hygiene behaviors among students.

2. Swachh  Patashala programme aims at enhancing provision of WASH services to children especially girls and disadvantaged on a sustained basis and  create awareness and promote good behavior among key stakeholder group. The programme also aims at enhancing institutional capacity for sustaining service delivery in schools.

3. This workshop aims to orient Headmasters and other resource persons with knowledge on essential elements of Swachh Patashala. This resource pool will in turn train key stakeholders to scale up WASH programme in schools across the State of Telangana.

Expected outcomes of the workshop
1. Gain knowledge on good WASH in School Programme - Why, What and How?
2. Gain better understanding on how to prepare, implement and sustain school level action plan for WASH on a mission mode.
